The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

TIG welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler rod, with shielding gas protecting the puddle. It is slower than MIG but gives the most control, a clean look and low spatter, which is why it is the choice for stainless, aluminum and thin material.

We bring portable TIG equipment for on-site work, though TIG is sensitive to wind and dirty metal, so we shield the work area and prep carefully. For visible joints like railings, furniture and food equipment, it leaves a tidy stack-of-dimes bead.

Good questions

TIG Welding: common questions

Is TIG stronger than MIG?

Not by default. Strength depends on joint design, penetration and filler. TIG offers more control and cleaner results on thin or sensitive metals, while MIG is faster on thicker steel.

Can you TIG weld outside?

Yes, with windbreaks, because wind blows away shielding gas. If conditions are too windy, we may choose another process or wait for calmer weather.
